City Day is Coming Up - Schedule Legislator Meetings Soon!
The LOC’s “City Day at the Capitol” is coming up on January 28 in Salem. This event will mark the first public event celebrating the LOC’s 100 years of representing Oregon’s cities. As with every long legislative session, City Day also represents the first chance for city leaders to engage with their respective state legislators on issues that are important to local communities and help elevate the LOC’s top legislative priorities for the session.
The agenda for City Day at the Capitol will be finalized over the next couple of weeks. We have commitments from Oregon’s legislative leadership to speak to attendees during the opening general session, which starts at 9 a.m. In addition, the LOC’s Intergovernmental Relations lobbyists will present some of the top legislative priorities for 2025-26. This will include: Community Infrastructure and Housing Development Funding; the 2025 Transportation Package; Lodging Tax Flexibility; and ORS 195.530 Johnson v. Grants Pass.
For those of you planning to attend and set meetings with your state legislators, we recommend reaching out now to schedule a time to meet during the afternoon on January 28. If you don’t know who your state legislators are, find them here. Please note that some of the newly elected legislators have yet to be updated with contact information from the state’s legislative site (OLIS). For those of you with new legislators, reach out to the leadership offices that can be found on OLIS. We recommend that your outreach to legislators take the form of a simple email requesting time to visit with the topics you want to cover and follow up with a phone call. For more information on advocacy, see the LOC’s Lobbying 101 Toolkit.
In addition to the morning program and afternoon legislator meetings, we have afternoon workshops for members to take advantage of from 1-4 p.m. This includes an update on the LOC’s Revenue Reform Project and a presentation on Lobbying 201, which will cover the process for project funding. Finally, Irma Esparza Diggs, the National League of Cities Sr. Executive Director of Federal Advocacy, will be presenting on federal lobbying and the NLC’s current priorities.
In addition, representatives from key state agencies will be on-site to meet with attendees from 3-4:45 p.m. Finally, City Day will wrap up with a 5 p.m. reception that will include a live band, food, and refreshments. All legislators and their staff have been invited to the reception, which is a great opportunity to interact with legislators in a less formal atmosphere.
