Oregon Real-ID Will Not Be Ready Until July of 2020
Starting October 1, 2020, the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require identification that meets the federal Real-ID standard to board commercial aircraft.
The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), however, cannot begin issuing Real-ID compliant Oregon driver licenses until July 1, 2020. It will not be possible for Oregon DMV to issue nearly one million Real-ID licenses between July 1 and October 1 of 2020.
Oregon DMV, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Port of Portland are working together to communicate how citizens can get a passport or a passport card in advance of the 2020 deadline. The Oregon DMV expects to have additional communication materials available by the end of the summer.
Since many cities offer passport services, Oregon DMV wants communities to be prepared for an increase in passport applications over the next couple years until the Real-ID program catches up.
