Cities Asked to Communicate with Businesses About Potential Health Risks from Stagnant Water

As plans to re-open parts of the state come into focus, cities and other public drinking water utility providers may want to engage in outreach to local businesses, property owners and managers, encouraging them to take steps to avoid health risks associated with stagnant water from prolonged closures.

Stagnant or standing water in private drinking water lines can cause conditions that increase the risk for growth and spread of Legionella and other bacteria. The Oregon Health Authority, which regulates public drinking water systems in Oregon, has provided guidance on how businesses can minimize risks from legionella and other bacteria. Additional guidance is available, including industry-specific recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
