LOC’s Lodging Tax Survey Due August 2

Cities — the LOC needs your help — please take the time to fill out our Lodging Tax Survey by next Friday, August 2 at 5 p.m.

The League is surveying cities about their transient lodging tax (TLT) rates and revenue. The data collected will be used to develop a transient lodging tax legislative proposal for increased flexibility around the use of TLT funds. In 2003, the Legislature passed the state lodging tax and restricted local transient lodging tax by requiring that revenue from any new or increased local lodging tax be spent according to a 70/30 split: 70% must be spent on “tourism promotion” or “tourism-related facilities,” and up to 30% is discretionary funds.

Tourism creates an increased demand for municipal service provision. Some of the clearest impacts are on roads, infrastructure, public safety, parks, and public restrooms. Short-term rentals and vacation homes also reduce the housing supply and exacerbate housing affordability issues.

As cities increasingly face budget deficits and are tasked with implementing new programs and policies, the need for flexibility around existing revenue is more important than ever.

The data collected in this survey will help ensure that a legislative proposal is well-informed and implementable by cities.

Please Note: LOC surveys, unless in special cases, are always sent to city chief administrative officers. If you did not receive this email, please contact research@orcities.org
