Governor Kotek and DPSST Announce the End of Training Backlog

This week, Governor Kotek and Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Director Phil Castle announced the end of the long-running police recruit training backlog.  Previously, newly hired police recruits could wait six months or more before beginning their 16-week basic police training at the DPSST Academy.  The Legislature appropriated additional funds to the agency in 2023 to implement a plan created by DPSST to add capacity through a second shift in the training day.  As a result, newly hired officers can expect to begin their academy training within 90 days of being sworn in.  The League would like to thank Governor Kotek, the DPSST and the Legislature for addressing this problem effectively.
