Census Deadline Extended
The U.S. Census Bureau has announced the extension of the 2020 Census deadline from July 31 to October 31. This is welcome news, as the census response rate is lower than expected due to COVID-19 and the suspension of all field work during the crisis. Oregon’s returns are slightly higher than the national average, but still below where we were 10 years ago. It’s vitally important that Oregon achieves a complete count, as census counts are used to direct federal resources to states and jurisdictions as well as determine proportional representation. City leaders are encouraged to check their city’s response rate and consult the Oregon Complete Count Committee website for tips on communicating the importance of filing out the census with residents.
